這是繼「綠袖子」（Greensleeves）之後，英格蘭最有名的民謠，這是一首古老的「謎歌」（Riddle Song），作於16-17世紀之間，作者不祥，與其他「謎歌」相同，男女之間的感情，故意利用一些很困難達到的要求，來考驗對方，其實是一種含蓄的愛的表現，就如同「你是否願意為我摘天上的星星」等話語一般。Scarborough是一個地名， 在英格蘭北部，Fair是一種植物或花卉的市集或展示會。

Scarborough Fair 由於是一首「謎歌」，所以有許多不同的歌詞，但皆不離提出一些不容易達到的考題。 這首歌還有一項很大的特色，就是其演唱的方式，應該說是合唱的方式，演唱者可以高、中、低音三部合唱，或者前後歌詞跟著唱，甚至有合聲者會領先主唱者唱前一句歌詞，變化多端，耐人尋味，這是聽這首歌時的最大享受。

“Scarborough Fair” is a traditional English ballad in the middle English period. As the versions of the ballad known under the title “Scarborough Fair” are usually limited to the exchange of these impossible tasks, many suggestions concerning the plot have been proposed, including the hypothesis that it is a song about the Plague.

It is know as a ‘riddle’ song as well as Greensleeves.
